Titles and responsibilities
Watching tv the other night, I came upon a cornhole championship and heard the announcer say that the team was "the No. Two in the World." That was a shocker. There is a whole world of cornhole players? I guess so. And now these two have to take on the task of always being the best since they are No.Two. That means they have tohit the target of 27 feet from front ends of the boards every time they play or they will fall from the No. Two Spot. If you think that is easy, then you've never tried to throw the dopey little beanbag and get it in the hole. It will drive you crazy because it looks simple. So having the title of No. Two meant hours of practice for this team to get to the top.
Once at Wilson we had a great girls' basketball team, and we won district title. So much fun because the girls had worked so hard and done so well. But the next step was the kick: we had to play Nazareth girls at regional. If you are from any place in Texas, you know that Nazareth gives a basketball to every newborn child, and the youngster is able to dribble before he or she can walk. Their record of state titles will never be topped by any other school. So we were playing them at South Plains on a Friday afternoon at something like 1:00 p.m. If you are going to stay even with Nazareth, you have to have every screaming fan you can to cheer you, so we were in a quandry(love that word). We couldn't call off school just for that or the state officials would come down on us. We couldn't leave school early or we would lose money for those gone in the afternoon. But dear Gary, our smart principal, came up with this plan: we would start the high school schedule at 8 and run the entire 7 periods by 11:30, be credited with a full day, and that would give us time to dash to Levelland. He had it all worked out in the tiny handwriting he always used, gave every teacher the times, and we did it, laughing to ourselves that we had fooled those Austin folks. Our girls did a fine job against Nazareth, and we were so proud of their effort and all those who came to support them.
In 1845 Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels had a title and an idea. He would encourage any of the people in Germany who were unhappy with the current political situation with its problems and move to this huge amount of uninhabited land that he and a group had bought just north of San Antonio. They would establish a new Germany with their own government, rules, and way of life. It would be so much better than the old Germany. So he was able to get more than 300 people to sign up for the experiment. He, however, failed to get the necessary wagons to bring them to this place he had named New Braunfels, so many of them died on the beach at Indianola or as they tried to walk north. The group that finally reached the area didn't know they had to fight Indians who thought the land was theirs. And when Prince Carl wrote to his fiancé Princess Sophia that he wanted her to come to this interesting new spot, she told him, "Not on your life, Buster" or something to that effect. He also was a terrible businessman and missed some payments. So he left for Germany, married Sophia, and never came back to Texas.
You can be given a ranking or special addition to your name, but to deserve it, you have to put in effort. If you don't, people give it no mind or don't count it as being important. It only has strength if you show what you did to earn it.
